What should I do if my water heater is leaking from the top?

If water is leaking from the top, shut off power and the water supply, then call for service. Turn the electric breaker off, or set the gas control to pilot/off. Close the cold-water shutoff valve above the tank. Do not remove panels near moisture. If safe, towel-dry the top and note whether the leak is at the cold inlet, hot outlet, or T&P valve.
